[TECH DISCUSSION] Is it possible to have a Dash Charge power bank?

So I'm in my junior year of electrical engineering and seeing the incredible things done with smartphones is something I really would like to be a part of one day. I wanted to discuss, considering the limits of current technology, if it would be possible to create a safe Dash Charging power bank for this device? For those who don't know how dash charging works I'll post a few links and my understanding of how it works and if I'm wrong at any point feel free to correct me.

Dash Charging - The Technology
The way dash charging works, as I understand it, is that the USB-C cable wires are made wider in diameter to accommodate a larger amount of current being passed through to the battery. The charger plugged into the wall takes on the burden of the extra voltage pushing the current through the wire and keeping it away from the phone's internal battery (which is brilliant). That means that the charger takes on the extra heat which isn't a problem because passive components are often more tolerant of heat than batteries are.

The Issues
A dash power bank could be charged up exactly like the phone; with the dash charger it could fill extremely fast. However, using the battery pack to charge the phone means that the internal Li-Ion batteries of that charger will be taking on the extra heat from within the case which could:
a) shorten the power bank's life span
b) Possibly lead to unsafe power banks if it got too hot

I also see there being limitations with the power bank's ability to maintain a full speed charge similar to wall charging along with what types of batteries would be needed to provide the power output similar to the dash charger.

The Solutions
So in my limited knowledge I think that the biggest enemy here is heat generated in the power bank. I feel like the rest could be overcome with a fairly large bank of 18650 batteries. It is possible to have a passive cooling system built into the power bank for heat dissipation but that might make the battery bank difficult for users to hold on their Pokemon Go outings. Also, reducing Dash Charging specifications just a little, decreasing the speed at which it could charge the device, would alleviate some of the concern. So while you might not get 60% in 30 minutes from the wall, perhaps aiming for 45-50% charge in that amount of time would increase the power bank lifespan and total amount of charges.

What do you all think? I'll readily admit I don't understand completely how current battery bank internals work to limit over-current and over-voltage scenarios as I've never taken one apart. If anyone wants to educate me and say whether they think Dash Charging is possible I'd love to hear about it. This is the kind of stuff I imagine the OnePlus engineers are sitting around working on every week.

[Discussion] How to get System Status: Official

Before rooting my Moto G4 plus, system status in the bootloader was "Official". After installing twrp I made a Nandroid backup and then rooted my device.
The system status changed to Modified

Now I have restored the unrooted system again and reflashed the stock recovery.

But still the system status in bootloader is " Modified"

My question is : Will this hamper ota updates?
Probable ans I think: Yes coz system is Modified according to bootloader though actually it's not (coz it's stock only)

Discussion: Is there any way to perform ota without re-flashing the stock firmware?

Note: I have the Backup of Unrooted (unmodified) system and the stock recovery.img too.

Help and participation really appreciated

[Discussion] What do you think the stock ROM will be like?

So, what are your thoughts on what the stock ROM for this phone will be like?
What features do you want / do you expect to be in this new phone?

(And, from what I know it comes with Android 7.0)

[DISCUSSION] What Roms do you guys use and why?

Hey, guys.
This is not a BEST ROM THREAD. Just out of curiosity, I wanna know what ROMs you guys use and why? Also describe what kernels and mods you're using? It's just a fun little way to see what works for different people.

Battery life discussion

Would like to see how this device performs with its proven chipset and large battery. For the uninitiated, go on Settings -> Battery. Post screenshots of the drain graph, the list of things draining, and your screen on time. Some info about your usage patterns would be great too!

Xposed Modules On Stock Firmware Discussion

!!!!PLEASE ONLY POST ABOUT XPOSED AND MODULES YOU ARE USING ON AT&T STOCK FIRMWARE NOT THE UNLOCKED U FIRMWARE AS THERE MAY BE DIFFERENCES IN EXPERIENCE AND USABILITY THAT MAY CAUSE PROBLEMS!!!!

This thread is for anyone to posted what Xposed modules you use and if they are or are not working. It will also be a thread to let others see who are new to xposed or havent used it on their s7 edge yet what is and isn't working as well as identifying what modules should be avoided because they are causing problems with the phone ex. lag, freezing, bootloops, other. please comment what you are using along with your experience and any news related to xposed and or modules. i will (when i have time) edit this post with what i have installed what does and doesnt work as well as posting what others put here. of course there will be a working and not working section that will be updated when things break or become useable. hope this thread helps some people out and saves some time and trouble.

AGAIN!!!!PLEASE ONLY POST ABOUT XPOSED AND THE MODULES YOU ARE USING ON STOCK AT&T FIRMWARE ONLY AS THERE CAN BE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN WHAT DOES AND DOESNT WORK ON STOCK FIRMWARE AND THE UNLOCKED U FIRMWARE!!!!

below is the modulea i current have installed. most do not work right now i will update the list in the second post when i feel comfortable that what im using really does or doesnt work, possibly by others that may be using the same modules.

[DISCUSSION] OnClickListener() usage

Hi guys. When i am writing code, i wondered something

Which OnClickListener type is more CPU and power friendly ?

A: Implementing OnClickListener to the Acitivity.

for example:

Code:

cpu_freq_limit.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() {
            @Override
            public void onClick(View v) {
              //something

            }

        });

B: Setting OnClickListener to a object. (like button)

for example:

Code:

@Override
    public void onClick(View v) {
        if(v==read) {
        //something
        }

[DISCUSSION] So now you're rooted. What's next?

So, many of us have used the released Engineering Bootloader and have gained glorious root. But what does that really mean for users now? Some of us are stoked about being able to finally block ads with AdAway. Others are looking forward to using Xposed again.

What does root mean for you? What cool apps or toolkits do you utilize with root? I want this to be a useful thread for people new to rooting in Marshmallow or just rooting in general. Post your setup and apps and explain a little bit about why you use them.

General Discussion [ Share and Compare ALL Custom Builds]

I'm posting in the "HTC 10 ROMS, KERNELS, RECOVERIES, & OTHER DEVELOPMENT" section because I feel a general discussion specific for those topics would be helpful in choosing what build will best fit your needs. I felt it'd be nice to have a thread dedicated to sharing our various experiences and opinions on the custom ROM's, Kernels, etc. for our HTC 10's

I'm not sure if this thread is allowed in this section due to the "general discussion" nature of it but I'm sure a moderator will remove it if that's the case.

<<Keep the trouble shooting questions for each specific ROM or Kernel to THEIR threads. So that way Devs can be made aware of any errors to be able to work on if need be and when people are searching for solutions to their problems the answers won't be scattered around. Consolidation makes everything easier!>>

What's your build? What are you loving about it? Any MOD recommendations?

Mine:

Viper10 ROM by TeamVenom
ElementalX Kernel

&

A.R.I.S.E
Sound Systems™
audio MOD

I'm a first time rooter (introduced to it by my fiance) and aspiring developer. I am going back to school to get that ball rolling. I'm socially awkward whilst being a social butterfly (once I'm out of my shell). The A.R.I.S.E team and TeamVenom have helped me to come out of that shell here on XDA so I'm ready to get socializing and talk all things root! However, I don't want to blow up their threads with unrelated posts...and so I've created this thread - so let's have at it and share ideas, opinions, and have fun! Remember to keep issue/ questions related to each ROM, Kernel, MOD etc. posted ON THEIR threads! So please include a link to their XDA thread when sharing what you've got.

Be kind and respectful. And have fun!

OnePlus 3 [Encrypted vs Unencrypted] [Benchmark Results & Discussion]

Hey XDA.

So I'm guessing I'm not the only one wondering if the OnePlus 3 benefits or not from coming with storage encryption by default as per Android Marshmallow OEM requirements. So I put a little experiment together and decided to share my results with the XDA OP3 community.

Disclaimer

None of the results here should be taken as an absolute, as always these tests are flawed and should be taken with a grain of salt, the whole idea of this was to see if disabling encryption would boost "performance" on the device.

Testing Methodology

To attempt to reduce differences that could affect results between both testing scenarios (Encryption enabled and disabled) I followed a set of rules perfoming these tests:
  • Both scenarios had the phone with the same amount of data that is to say, same apps installed and files on sdcard as to replicate results on an equal and real environemnt (not freshly restored device with no data or apps)

  • Tests were run back to back for each set of tests. after the first set (Boot Time) there was a 3 minute period for the phone to cool down before perfoming the second set (Antutu) etc.

  • First all tests were run with encryption enabled after disabling encryption and restoring all apps and data a period of time (5-6min) was taken to ensure device was cool again before tests for the second scenario were started.

  • Boot Time was done by starting timer as soon as power button was held and holding until OnePlus Logo and Name appeared on screen, timer was stopped as soon as Lockscreen rendered.

Results

Quote:

Oneplus 3

Encrypted------------------------------------------- Un-Encrypted

Boot Time

0:30:82-------------------------------------------0:30:32

0:34:44-------------------------------------------0:28:98

0:30:78-------------------------------------------0:29:54

0:34:79-------------------------------------------0:28:32

0:34:28-------------------------------------------0:28:15

Median 1,2,3,4,5

M 33:02-------------------------------------------M 29:06 +12%

Boot Time saw a 12% benefit from Unencrypted storage which I expected but in my opinion isn't as big as a difference when compared to other devices with and without encryption before the Snapdragon 820

Antutu

stuck at 70%------------------------------------ 143698

143297------------------------------------------- 143213

141531-------------------------------------------- 142985

141849------------------------------------------- 142895

141501------------------------------------------- 142502

Median 2,3,4,5

M 142045-------------------------------------------M 142899 +0.60%

The first test performed on the encrypted scenario got stuck at 70% and as to not skew results the first scores for both scenarios were ignored when calculating median, here we can se a 0.60% increase in performance for the unencrypted scenario which in my opinion is too small of a difference to draw a correlation between encrypted and unencrypted and worth mentionting is that anyway I believe no significant differences would be tested and found here between both scenarios because of the way encryption works.

Geekbench

2409-----------------------------------------2396
5620-----------------------------------------5597

2433-----------------------------------------2406
5591-----------------------------------------5628

2428------------------------------------------2392
5587----------------------------------------- 5578

2439-----------------------------------------2390
5643-----------------------------------------5581

2431------------------------------------------2391
5569-----------------------------------------5544

Median 1,2,3,4,5

M 2428-----------------------------------------M 2395 -1.35%
M 5602--------------------------------------------M 5586 -0.28%

Here we can observe a decrease in performance of 1.35% in single core results and 0.28% in multi-core results which again in my opinion does not amount to anything noticeable in day to day usage and I believe is not the result of encrypted or unencrypted storage differences

Conclusion

Quote:

Based on these results and this personal experience only, I conclude that for me the only benefit of unencrypting my storage was a shorter boot time (~4sec) and performance wise there is little to no difference at all, and while the security benefits of Android encryption are questionable to say the least. some employers/companies require this to be enabled at all times, and since in these results the differences are so minisucule, there would be at a glance no reason to not stay encrypted if you already are. Although a more in depth testing methodology and cases where storage read/write speeds were predominant would be ideal to maybe see significant differences between performance of encrypted and unencrypted storage, I presume this would not affect a regular user enough to warrant the reformating of all user data if the storage is already encrypted, which will probably be the common state of Android phones that are coming out now and in the future.

Obviously this will not replicate the same experience anyone can have so I encourage anyone to reply to this thread with their personal experience on the matter, what is your opinion on encryption? and if you find this post helpful somehow remember to hit the thanks button on my post or any other user that replies helpfully to you. Thanks.

Canadian OnePlus 3 discussion thread

Hey guys just thought I'd start a thread for us Canadians to share information and also our experiences with the OnePlus 3. I just got mine this Monday and so far I'm very happy with it. What about you?
