Using S6 as a hotspot

Simple question I think :) so I notice I have anice option for using my S6 as a hotspot using my 4G or 3G data. Now what I would like to do is perhaps connect my I pad to it. Would this work OK? Also does my S6 screen need to be on the entire time?
