I went ahead and enabled data and tethering for my Ting sim.
Ting's FAQs suggest that tethering cannot be used with LTE data, but I had no problem. Ting with LTE connection showed the same speed on the R1 HD and the wifi connected device, at the time, about 20 Mbps up and down.
