[Q] Should one expect most recent ROMs to be the fastest ?

Hi,

Most active threads in the Galaxy S I9000 Android Development section are about Android 6.0.1 ROMs, which advertise themselves as "highly optimized" (one of them even dare "FASTER FASTER FASTER and FASTER"…).

Yet the few I tried are a nightmare in terms of usability — e.g. it often takes several seconds for the keyboard to show up… Which seems not really surprising, since hardware requirements are often following hardware capabilities.

My (almost) only requirements for an Android ROM are :
1/ fastness : I want my phone to react (positively…) as instantaneously as could be expected when I act on it ;
2/ stability — though I don't mind a random crash once a week if it "helps" satisfying criterion 1.

Can I expect a 6.0.1 ROM to fulfill these criterions, or should I dig old threads for some 2.x ROM ? Or has a better efficiency level been reached on some version inbetween ? Or maybe, are discrepancies between ROMs of the same Android version larger than between Android versions (I see a couple of threads about 4.4.2 and 5.1.1…) ?

Thanks.
