From custom ROM to DP4?

I'm on PureNexus right now and I'd like to mobs to a developer preview. I heard DP5 is have some issues so I thought I'd just go to 4 for now. Is it as simple as backing up my data and flashing the image file? Will my phone stay unlocked and can I keep root access?
