Can I avoid opengapps.org and backup gapps myself?

Hello,
On CyanogenMod wiki it says:

It is possible to perform a "backup" of the Google Apps on your device and then "restore" them, but this does take additional steps which are not covered here.

Question: Is this still possible?

Using opengapps.org in the past got me problems due do CM13's recovery toybox, so I'm looking for alternatives on installing Google Apps.
